Overview of the EN 1822 Standard

EN 1822 is an international standard used to evaluate the performance of high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) and ultra-low penetration air (ULPA) filters. The standard defines test methods for measuring filtration efficiency, identifying the most penetrating particle size (MPPS), and verifying filter integrity through leak detection.

“Ensuring high-efficiency filters provide reliable particle removal performance under defined test conditions.”

Key Test Methods in EN1822

MPPS Efficiency Measurement

MPPS Efficiency Measurement

One of the core principles of EN1822 is testing filter efficiency at the Most Penetrating Particle Size (MPPS).

The MPPS represents the particle size that is most difficult for the filter to capture. Testing at this size ensures that the filter meets its required performance under the most challenging conditions.

Leak Detection Test

In addition to efficiency measurement, EN1822 requires leak testing to verify the integrity of the filter.

During the leak scan test:

  • an aerosol is introduced upstream of the filter
  • a scanning probe moves across the downstream surface
  • particle concentration is monitored to identify potential leaks

This test ensures that the filter frame, seal, and media are free from local defects.

Filter Classification According to EN1822

EN1822 classifies filters based on their measured efficiency at the MPPS. Typical HEPA classifications include:

Class

Minimum Efficiency

H13

≥ 99.95%

H14

≥ 99.995%

ULPA filters extend to higher classes such as U15, U16, and U17 with even stricter efficiency requirements.

Typical Test Configuration

A typical EN1822 test system includes several key components. These elements work together to ensure stable aerosol generation and accurate particle measurement during testing.
